Full Description
January 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible sub-square enclosure of unknown date along with several linear features are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred on TG 0855 0080.
The enclosure itself is trapezoidal in plan, measuring up to 23m by 24m externally, with a ditch that measures up to 3.9m in width. It appears to contain a central pit, up to 7.8m in diameter, centred on TG 0848 0078. However, there are many geological marks visible within this field (S2), and it is difficult to be certain of the pit feature.
Roman finds, including tiles and brick tesserae have been recovered immediately to the north west (NHER 29106). It is stated that two Roman roads may cross in this area, and the site is referred to as a temple. However, it was not possible to confirm this assertion, as the Roman roads did not appear to be visible on the available aerial photographs. Therefore it is possible that the sub-square feature is indeed Roman in date, and may represent a temple site.
It may also, however, represent a square barrow, or small moated site, and as many of the linear features surrounding the enclosure seem to be on the same alignment as field boundaries depicted on the tithe map of 1844 (S3), it is possible that it is medieval to post medieval in date.
E. Bales (NMP), January 2010.
