Full Description
January 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Possible medieval to post medieval house platforms and linear ditch and bank features are visible as earthworks, soilmarks and cropmarks on aerial photographs, on land to the north of Low Farm, Wicklewood. The site is centred on TG 0843 0009.
Several north-south linear banks and ditches are visible to the west of the site, the most substantial of which runs from TG 0840 0022 to TG 0843 0009, and appears to be a continuation of a field boundary that is visible to the north on the Tithe map of 1844 (S5). It is therefore possible that the other linear features represent possible field boundaries or land division from the medieval to post medieval period.
A grid pattern of drainage ditches is also visible in this area to the west of the farm, but these were not mapped as they were considered to be modern in origin.
To the east, cropmarks of at least six possible building platforms are visible, in the form of banks measuring in the region of 15m by 7m, surrounded by an area of disturbed ground, or a large pit feature. These features were also considered to be medieval to post medieval in origin, although it is possible that they represent more recent agricultural activity. Buildings are depicted in this area on Bryant’s map of 1826 (S6).
E. Bales (NMP), January 2010.
