Full Description
January 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Undated linear ditches and a possible fragmentary enclosure are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), on land to the south of Highoak, Wicklewood. The site is centred on TG 0745 0060.
Cropmarks of several ditches are visible in the area, some of which are depicted as field boundaries on the tithe map (S4), and this area is shown as ‘Wicklewood green’ on Faden’s 1797 map (S5), suggesting that the diches may represent medieval to post medieval land division surrounding the green.
A possible fragmentary enclosure is suggested by the ditches which (almost) meet at right angles at TG0759 0040, and a faint linear cropmark running diagonally north east-south west from TG 0741 0046 to TG 0720 0027 may be the possible ‘road’ recorded previously as NHER 8915.

August-September 2022. Watching Brief and Trial Trenching.
Archaeological work undertaken during installation of new water main.
The stripping of the working easement was monitored in this area (where the route of the pipeline ran immediately to the east of Buck Lane), although no archaeologically-significant features were recorded. It was though clear that this initial strip had left extensive areas of topsoil and subsoil, which potentially obscured any additional remains present. A subsequent phase of archaeological mitigation saw the excavation of six trial trenches in the areas where soils deposits survived. These revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits, although it should be noted that none were positioned to coincide with the cropmarks mapped at this location.
See report (S7) and NHER 66846 for further details.
