Summary

Metal-detecting at this location between 2009 and 2023 recovered a notable assemblage of Early Saxon finds, the size and composition of which suggests this is the site of an inhumation cemetery. These finds include numerous brooch fragments and several sleeve clasps. Other finds recovered include a Late Neolithic barbed and tanged flint arrowhead; an Iron Age/Roman glass bead; a post-medieval pottery sherd; Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; a post-medieval jetton and various other Late Bronze Age and Roman to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include a Late Bronze Age socketed axehead fragment; Roman brooches; a Middle Saxon pin; Late Saxon finger rings or earrings, a buckle and strap end; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval scabbard chape, key handle and lead ampulla; a medieval/post-medieval lead weight and post-medieval mounts, a purse bar, sword-belt hanger, copper alloy weights, copper alloy unidentified object, lead spindle whorls and lead possible spindle whorl or weight.

A metal-detector survey was carried out in the north-east corner of the field, in the area which has produced the majority of the Early Saxon finds. This produced only a single Early Saxon find (wrist clasp) although numerous later metal objects were recovered. It is thought likely that this is the result of a much shallower plough this season due to the wet weather. Overall it seems likely that most of the Saxon finds came from off or around a ridge of higher ground which runs around the north eastern corner of the field. This seems to correspond to field boundaries still visible in 1946 (S2) and the landowner confirmed they were still banks until quite recently. The lack of ploughing in this area due to the presence of hedgerows/banks may be why more finds survive there.
