Evaluation of proposed development site.
The remains of a structure and associated culvert possible of post-medieval date were recovered. The nature of the structure is unknown but it may have been part of a sewage system. The distance between the walls of c. 1m could suggest that an alleyway or gap existed between adjacent buildings. A layer of crushed brick observed probably relates to the clearance of terraced housing in 1945 prior to the construction of the Jarrold's printworks. A single clay tobacco pipe was recovered from the brick culvert. A small area of chalk was observed that could be part of the chalk raft upon which the Carnelite Friary was constructed and could mark the northern extent of the friary.
See (S1) and (S2) for further details.
