Full Description
August 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a ring ditch, probably represent the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3) along the line of what is now the Norwich Southern Bypass Route at Harford Park and Ride. The ring ditch is centred on TG 2180 0383 and is 19m in diameter and has a large central pit, 3m across, potentially representing a central burial pit. NO sign of the mound was visible on aerial photograph. This barrow is located on a band of higher land situated in-between the River Yare and River Tas valleys, approximately 700m to the southwest of the larger Harford Farm barrow cemetery (NHER 52280), see record for details. The Harford Park and Ride excavations revealed evidence for Later Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date pits and post-holes, indicating probable settlement and depositional activity. A Late Bronze Age cremation burial was also recovered (NHER 39268) (S4-S5), indicating the importance of this area throughout the Bronze Age. A Bronze Age rapier was found within close proximity to this ring ditch during the watching brief for the road construction (NHER 29060).
S. Horlock (NMP), 23 August 2009.
