Summary

The cropmarks of possible enclosures and/or fields of possible late Iron Age or Roman date are visible on aerial photographs to the southwest of the Harford Park and Ride development excavation area (NHER 39268). These features are likely to represent a phase of enclosure and fields broadly contemporary with NHER 52145 to the northeast, which probably either pre-dating or post-dating the main phase of Roman settlement encountered during the excavations (NHER 39268), the cropmarks of which have been recorded under NHER 9753.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fields and boundaries of unknown, but possible Iron Age to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3) to the southwest of the Harford Park and Ride development excavation area (NHER 39268). This site is centred on TG 2146 0369 and consists of a series of fragmentary linear and rectilinear ditches, appearing to represent the remains of possible enclosures and/or fields and boundaries. A significant number of these boundaries have double ditched components and are likely to have acted as trackways. These boundaries follow the same alignment as an area of enclosures and field boundaries to the northwest (NHER 52145), which lie within the Harford Park and Ride development excavation area (NHER 39268). One of these ditches was revealed in the excavation to be broadly Roman in date, but it is not clear whether it pre-dated the main Roman phase, dating to the early to mid second century AD (S4), or post-dates it. These fields may represent a later Iron Age to Roman phase of enclosure and fields or perhaps a later Roman episode that post-dates the main settlement. Early Saxon date material has also been recovered from this general area (NHER 29102) and clearly indicates the continued use of this site after the Roman period.

December 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore substation site.
One of areas examined coincided with the pair of north-west to south-east aligned cropmarks recorded at TG 2144 0359 and was adjacent to a number of the other cropmarks in this group. There was no evidence for associated sub-surface remains.
See NHER 66381 for further details.

February-June 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed route of Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm onshore cable.
None of the trenches excavated at this location revealed archaeologically-significant remains, despite one coinciding with the cropmarks recorded at TG 2144 0359 and two others positioned to coincide with any features continuing the line of cropmarks recorded immediately to the north.
See NHER 66381 for further details.
