Full Description
March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a number of fragmentary ditches, possibly relating to former field boundaries and enclosures of unknown date, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Mangreen Lane, Swardeston (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 2072 0302. The site consists of a series of fragmentary ditches, which may represent several phases of activity, although it must be stated that a large number of possible cropmarks were omitted from the mapping due to a possible non-archaeological cause. At TG 2065 0301 and TG 2080 0309 possible rectilinear ditched elements may have indicated parts of enclosures or fields (S2-S3), however the marks were considered to be of uncertain archaeological origin and were not mapped. The date of the individual features mapped is unknown, although Neolithic and Bronze Age flintwork, a burnt mound and dispersed potboilers and Roman date to post medieval material (NHER 28719, 40407 & 50099) have all been found within the vicinity of the site, suggesting a wide period of activity.
