Summary

Metal-detecting between 2009 and 2013 recovered Roman, Middle Saxon/medieval and medieval to post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval jettons and tokens and Late Bronze Age to Early Saxon, Late Saxon, medieval, post-medieval and undated metal objects. The metal finds include Late Bronze Age socketed axehead fragments; an Iron Age brooch; a Roman brooch, harness mount, hair pin, part of a seal box, a staff terminal, steelyard weights and a cosmetic mortar and pestle; a Roman/Early Saxon buckle; numerous Early Saxon dress accessories and several brooches as well as a harness mount and part of a hanging bowl; a Late Saxon stirrup fragment and buckle; a medieval buckle, harness fitting, hasp and thimble; medieval/post-medieval dress accessories and copper alloy vessel fragments; a post-medieval apothecary weight, crotal bells, key and a buckle and undated casting waste and a steelyard weight. The presence and type of Early Saxon objects found suggests that this may be an Early Saxon cemetery site.
