NHER 52395 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of probable road or trackway

The cropmarks of section of road or track of unknown date, but interpreted as being either Roman or medieval to post medieval in date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1). The road is centred on TG 2965 0318 and appears to runs along the contour on the middle slopes of the valley side. The road or track has no obvious relationship with any entrances in or out of the field and does not fit with the post medieval field layout as depicted on the 1839 Yelverton Tithe map (S2). The route run parallel to Yelverton/Holverston parish boundary suggesting that it may be at least medieval in date. It is feasible that the road represents part of a road or track of Roman date, although there is little direct evidence for this interpretation. Although Roman date finds have been recovered from the wider vicinity of the site (NHER 25107).
The site consists of the parchmark of compacted or metalled road surface, approximately 5m wide, with a narrow ditch to either side. The road is visible for 120m and has a branch road or track to the north, leading towards the road and parish boundary.
