Summary

The site of possible World War Two defences are visible on aerial photographs alongside a field boundary next to the Upper Kiln Lane in Alpington. These defences possibly consisted of a gun emplacement or spigot mortar emplacement and a trench, although it is was extremely hard to discern these features clearly. It is feasible that both features relate to agricultural activity and not military defence.

Map

November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The site of possible World War Two structures is visible on aerial photographs alongside a field boundary next to the Bergh Apton Road near to Alpington village (S1). The site is centred on TG 2993 0118 and consists of a two rectangular temporary structures or platforms, with possible uneven roofs, perhaps the result of canvas coverings. These possible structures are visible during the early months of 1946 (S1-S2), but have been removed by October the same year (S3). This could lend some weight to the interpretation that these were structures with a military purpose, however it would also be consistent with temporary agricultural structures or features, such as haystacks or storage containers. Due to the uncertainty over the nature of these possible structures, they were not mapped as part of the NMP, instead there potential existence is recorded.
