Full Description
November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a rectilinear ditched enclosure of unknown, but possibly Roman or Saxon date are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Gull Lane, Framingham Earl (S1). The site is centred on TG 2822 0332.
The cropmarks indicate a possible rectilinear enclosure, measuring at least 50m by at least 95m, although the southern part of the site was not visible. It possible that the ditches demarcated a parcel of agricultural land or stock enclosure, rather than an actual domestic site, although this is uncertain. The enclosure and/or field appears to underlie the post medieval field layout that is depicted on the 1805 Framingham Earl Tithe map (S2), potentially suggesting that the site is at least medieval in date. Finds dating to the Roman period and Early and Late Saxon periods have been found within the general vicinity of these cropmarks (NHER 31192, 37492, 37656 & 30897) and it is feasible that the possible enclosure is broadly contemporary in date with these finds, in particular those dating to the Roman period.
S. Horlock (NMP), 3 November 2009.
February 2016. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of site on proposed route of Poringland to Whitlingham Rising Main pipeline.
The narrow strip examined coincided with the north-east to south-west aligned cropmark at TG 2822 0331, which was shown to be associated with a surviving ditch.
See NHER 69528 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 January 2026.
January-February 2017. Watching Brief.
Maintained during installation of Poringland to Whitlingham Rising Main pipeline.
No archaeologically-significant remains were recorded during the monitoring of topsoil stripping along this section of the working easement.
See NHER 69528 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 January 2026.
