December 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of small post medieval rectangular enclosure, a possible medieval to post medieval trackway or boundary and a drainage ditch are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Caistor Lane, Poringland (S1-S4). The site is centred on TG 2594 0330 and would have been within the former area of Poringland Heath.
The site consists of a group of features that are thought to relate to medieval to post medieval activity. A pair of broad parallel ditches, approximately 25m apart, are likely to relate to a former trackway or droveway. These are broadly aligned along the post medieval field pattern, as depicted on the 1805 East Poringland Tithe map (S5) and the 1840 Caistor St Edmund Tithe map (S6), and along the parish boundary between Poringland and Caistor St Edmund. The rectangular enclosure recorded at TG 2603 0315 was formerly recorded under NHER 13732, measures approximately 45m by 30m, and is likely to represent a small stock enclosure that sits alongside one of the post medieval boundaries marked on the 1805 East Poringland Tithe map (S5). A slightly irregular ditch-like feature within the eastern part of this site, which was possibly previously recorded as a curvilinear enclosure under NHER 13732, is likely to be a drainage ditch. Other cropmarks within this area, including a large enclosure, which are thought to pre-date the post medieval period have been recorded under NHER 13732.

Cropmarks visible on Google Earth imagery (S7).

August-September 2013. Trial Trenching.
This evaluation of land west of the Norwich Road saw trenches excavated across the small enclosure and the irregular cropmark to the north, both of which were found to be associated with surviving sub-surface remains. The enclosure produced no finds and artefacts from the second ditch were limited to a single post-medieval pottery sherd and a fragment of clay tobacco pipe.
