Full Description
November 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The site of World War Two transmitter site and associated structures is visible on aerial photographs (S1) to the east of Shotesham Road. The site is centred on TG 2587 0019. This site has been previously recorded on the aerial photograph card as a Decca Navigator transmitter site, which represents a late World War Two development in radio navigation systems (S2). This late date would account for the signs of relatively recent construction and demolition at the site in April 1946 (S1). This site is likely to have been associated with the Stoke Holy Cross radar station (NHER 14227 and 32538) 2.5km to the north. The site consists of a central mast surrounding by a square or trapezoidal arrangement of parchmarks and/or bases. Although it is hard to discern for certain on the photograph it is possible that these are the feet or bases for an aerial array of masts. A cable path runs from the mast to an area of buildings and a probable generator. A circular pit and V-shaped trench arrangement may represent the remains of a spigot mortar emplacement, although the size and shape of the earthworks would be more in keeping with a trench shelter for air raids.
