Full Description
March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The site of a World War Two military structure of uncertain function and associated trenches and/or shelters is visible on aerial photographs on Thorpe Great Heath (S1-S3). The site is centred on TL 8939 8979 and is located immediately adjacent to East Wretham Airfield (NHER 5742). The main component of the site appears to consist of a semi-circular array of possible posts or concrete, with two taller structures positioned at either end of the array. It is possible that this was associated with the transmission or detection of signals or used for target positioning, either for the airfield or for training activities on the heath (see NHER 53452 for details). A small group of rectangular trenches, possibly associated shelters, are located to the northeast of the site. To the south the main structural component of this site is Home Mere. The aerial photographs would suggest that the basin of the mere was being used by the military, possibly as a shooting range. The possible traces of a structure are visible in 1944 (S1).
