The site of a World War Two military training area is visible on aerial photographs in Croxton (S1-S3). The site is centred on TL 8892 8656. The site consists of two small concentrations of weapons pits and short practice trenches (S2-S3), which are defined by extent of area in the mapping. Aerial photographs dating to 1944 (S1), only available as poor quality reproductions, reveals a ‘speckled’ lighter appearance to the whole of this area of grass, which is likely to indicate the presence of additional pits and trenches not detectable on the later aerial photograph. Numerous vehicle tracks are also visible again indicating military use of the area.
S. Horlock (NMP), 12 March 2010.
