Map

March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The site of a small World War Two military training area is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The site is centred on TL 8986 8582. The site consists of a group of weapons pits and practice trenches arranged around Smithfield Plantation. A larger area of training features and a searchlight battery is located to the north (NHER 53456). A light coloured circular mark with no obvious height or depth is visible to the south of the plantation in 1945 (S2). This could be the remains of an infilled bomb crater or large weapons pit, although could equally be material has been deposited or disturbed for agricultural purposes.
