Full Description
March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of braided tracks or earlier routes of a road of at least post medieval date, with probable earlier medieval origins, are visible on aerial photographs alongside the Kilverstone and Croxton parish boundary (S1-S2). The site is centred on TL 9038 8702 and consists of a series of parallel banks and hollows to the west of the A1075 road. Although it is considering most likely that these earthworks relate to earlier routes of the A1075 road, which cuts across a large area of heath, it is feasible that some of the earthworks relate boundaries demarcating the parish boundary, which runs alongside this route; although the slightly irregular and braided nature of the earthworks makes unlikely. These earthworks have not been mapped as part of the NMP due to the likelihood that they represent relatively temporary post medieval tracks, rather their presence has been recorded.
S. Horlock (NMP), 12 March 2010.
November 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A further section of these braded trackways is visible to the north on aerial photographs (S3-S8), from TL 9108 8821 to TL 9123 8859. These earthworks have been mapped, as they are visible apparently terminating at, or cut through by a linear bank visible as a trackway on the Tithe Map (S9). This trackway has been recorded separately, along with some possible ridge and furrow earthworks on a different orientation to the trackways (NHER 54517). A possible rectangular enclosure is also visible to the south west of the southern end of the trackways, centred on TL 9010 8671 (S1-S2), but is considered to be a possible adjunct to the post-medieval boundaries, and has not been mapped.
E. Bales (NMP), 04 Nov 2010.
