Full Description
March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of possible enclosures and boundary ditches of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs of a former area of heath in Croxton (S1-S2). The site is centred on TL 8991 8688 and consists of a series of ephemeral earthworks possibly visible within the heathland vegetation. A small embanked enclosure or platform is visible to the north of the site and the remainder of the site is characterised by possible boundary ditches dividing up the heath. It is possible that some or all of these features are associated with the enclosures recorded to the north (NHER 33904), which are also likely to be medieval to post medieval in date. Cropmarks of possible additional ditches and pits within this area were visible in 1950 (S3) after the heath was converted to arable. However it was hard differentiate between linear marks caused by relatively recent tracks on the heath and potential archaeological ditches and therefore none of these features were mapped.
