Summary

The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch are visible on aerial photographs to the west of the Roman town at Caistor. This feature may represent the remains of Bronze Age round barrow or later prehistoric or Iron Age roundhouse, although no material of this date has been recovered from this area to date (NHER 9743). A group of similarly sized, although admittedly more regular in shape, ring ditches are located 80m to the south (NHER 52182) and were interpreted as being probable barrows.

Map

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch, potentially represent the remains of Bronze Age round barrow or later prehistoric or Iron Age roundhouse, are visible on aerial photographs to the west of the Roman town at Caistor (S1). The site is centred on 2223 0332. The cropmarks of the penannular ring ditch, 11m in diameter, are extremely faint and within an area of geological cropmarks and therefore the archaeological origin of this feature is uncertain. If this ring ditch is archaeological then it is likely to represent the remains of Bronze Age round barrow or later prehistoric or Iron Age roundhouse, although no material of this date has been recovered from this area to date (NHER 9743). A group of similarly sized, although admittedly more regular in shape, ring ditches are located 80m to the south (NHER 52182) and were interpreted as being probable barrows.
