Summary

The cropmarks of possible undated ditches and former field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Blakeney Farm, Croxton. The site consists of a series of fragmentary ditches, some of which may be former field boundaries. Finds in the area range in date from Iron Age through to the medieval period (NHER 31906 & 37327) and although these features are undated, it is possible that some of the ditches are Iron Age to Roman in date.

Map

March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of possible undated ditches and former field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Blakeney Farm, Croxton (S1-S2). The site is centred on TL 8820 8510 and consists of a series of fragmentary ditches, some of which may be former field boundaries. However it must be noted that the geological background in this area produces linear and rectilinear cropmarks. Whilst the features mapped would appear to be distinct from these natural cropmarks, it was hard to be completely certain. Finds in the area range in date from Iron Age through to the medieval period (NHER 31906 & 37327) and although these features are undated, it is possible that some of the ditches are Iron Age to Roman in date.

January - May 2010. Geophysical survey.
The survey revealed two weak positive parallel linear anomalies spaced 13m apart alongside the railway line. It is likely that these are ditches which may have flanked the sides of a former trackway.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
