Full Description
March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The possible earthworks of enclosures of possible medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs on the former Croxton Heath (S1). The site is centred on TL 8890 8844 and consists of two possible ditches rectangular enclosures, one of which may have an inner bank and measures 100m by at least 80m (S1). It is possible that these enclosures may be medieval to post medieval in date, similar to NHER 50426 to the north. The line of a road of at least post medieval date (NHER 53453) runs in-between the two possible enclosures. These possible earthworks have been tentatively identified on a laser copy of a single vertical aerial photograph from 1923 (S1), which is quite badly scratched and with poor tonal contrast, subsequently all of the possible archaeological features identified are of uncertain significance. It is also hard, given the quality of the photograph, the lack of a stereo pair or other photography dating to that period, to be certain that these possible earthworks relate to relatively recent activity or tracks across the heath.
S. Horlock (NMP), 19 March 2010.
