June 2001. Watching Brief.
The watching brief revealed three post-holes, two pits and one section of ditch c. 077m wide, 0.35m deep with 9.5m length surviving orientated east to west that was buried under 500mm of alluvium. The fill of the ditch included occasional inclusions of charcoal, late Saxon pottery, flint tools and flakes. Cattle and horse bones were also recovered from the ditch, which could suggest a settlement site may be located nearby. Of the three post-holes one was cut by the ditch indicating that it pre-dates the ditch. The two pits contained no dating evidence.
See (S2).
