Full Description
June 2001. Watching brief A11 improvement scheme site B.
Five features including two ditches with one having an associated bank and a peat filled depression. The peat filled depression contained no finds and it probably a natural feature. The ditch orientated north to south contained occasional fire-cracked flint and a large gritty medieval coarseware base probably dating to the 12th/13th centuries AD. The second ditch orientated northwest to southeast measured 2m wide and 0.5m deep with a U-shaped profile contained a single sherd of abraded Iron Age pottery along with medieval pottery also dating to the 12th/13th centuries AD. The bank associated with the ditch was located to the northeast and was probably created by piling spoil from the ditch.

The monument polygon has been extended to the north and south slightly as a result of the NMP mapping.
Earthwork ditches are visible in the area as earthworks on aerial photographs (S2). It is possible that they may relate to the excavated evidence of medieval activity on the site, and although they do not appear to have the exact orientation of those excavated (above), it is likely that these earthworks represent the same features, degraded over time. It is also possible that these features have become used as post medieval drainage features also.
Certainly the earthwork ditches visible on aerial photographs approximately 100m to the north (NHER 30282) have been tentatively dated to the medieval period, and the fields to the north have produced a wealth of medieval and multi-period finds (NHER 31402, 31044) as well as probable medieval earthworks (NHER 57434 and 57435).
E. Bales (NMP), 12 September 2012.
