Map

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks and soilmarks of a possible section of Roman road or an embankment of uncertain date to the north of the Roman town of Venta Icenorum (NHER 9786) (S1-S2). The road or bank, which is centred on TG 2309 0385, is visible for approximately 100m and is up to 6.5m wide and flanked by a ditch to either side. It seems likely that this road or embankment led from a river crossing and provided access to the Roman town from the northwest, see NHER 52293 for discussion of a possible western extension of this feature. Whilst a Roman date seems the most plausible interpretation for this roadway or embankment across the river valley floor, it is also feasible that it could relate to a medieval to post medieval drainage works.
