Full Description
March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The vegetation marks of a possible enclosure and boundary ditches of probable Roman date to the northeast of Caistor Roman town (NHER 9786) are visible on aerial photographs (S1) within the grounds of Caistor Hall. The site is centred on TG 2354 0360 and consists of an incomplete or partially visible rectangular or square enclosure and fragments of boundary ditches. To the immediate north of the cropmarks the site of a third century AD Roman building and road was excavated in the nineteenth century (NHER 9818). Finds from the general vicinity of the cropmarks also indicate that the Roman settlement continued into this part of the grounds of Caistor Hall (NHER 12575). It therefore seems likely that this fragment of a rectangular or square enclosure and the ditches elements relating to the extramural Roman settlement in this area.
S. Horlock (NMP), 11 March 2009.
