Summary

A possible enclosure (or part of one) of unknown date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Broadly trapezoidal in plan, it is not clear whether the potential western side of the enclosure is just that, or whether it is instead an internal subdivision, or a ditch of later (or earlier date). While the cropmarks of enclosures and other features have also been identified a short distance to the east (for example, NHER 53521) and north (NHER 53522), it is not clear whether the enclosure described here is related to or contemporary with these other sites. Sharing some of the orientation of the postulated Iron Age to Roman enclosures and enclosure complex to the east and north, it might conceivably be of similar date, but the character of the enclosure, which is relatively large and lacks internal subdivisions, is rather different, and it is unlikely to represent settlement, in contrast to the enclosure complex to the east.

Map

April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible enclosure of unknown date is visible as a cropmark on Google Earth imagery (S1), centred at TG 1248 0849. It appears to be broadly trapezoidal in plan, although it is not clear whether what appears to be its western side is instead an internal subdivision or simply a boundary ditch relating to a different phase of activity. Its orientation and general character would suggest that an Iron Age to Roman period date is plausible. However, while it shares (more or less) the orientation of enclosures of this postulated date a short distance to its north (NHER 53522) and east (NHER 53521), its character is rather different. It is relatively large and open, whereas those to the east in particular are small and complex; the latter seem likely to have been used for settlement, a function which is unlikely for the enclosure described here.
If most of the plan of the enclosure is visible (i.e. its postulated west side is just that), it measures at least 74m long and 55m wide. An additional ditch to its north may denote an annexe. There are a number of potential entrances in its ditch circuit but the imagery/cropmark is not clear enough to identify these with any certainty.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 27 April 2010.
