Summary

Cropmarks of uncertain archaeological significance and date are visible on aerial photographs. They appear to form three sides of a trapezoidal or polygonal enclosure. However, they are only visible on a single aerial photograph, and therefore the possibility that they are temporary agricultural marks cannot be ruled out. Furthermore, they may relate to post medieval field boundaries also visible as cropmarks to their north, and may therefore be of relatively recent origin and low archaeological significance.

Map

April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of uncertain archaeological significance and date are visible on an aerial photograph (S1), centred at TG 1178 0910. They appear to form three sides of a trapezoidal or polygonal enclosure. However, they are only visible on a single aerial photograph, and therefore the possibility that they are temporary agricultural marks cannot be ruled out. Furthermore, they may relate to the post medieval field boundaries to their north which are also visible as cropmarks but have not been mapped by the NMP. Although not a perfect match in terms of orientation and alignment, one of these boundaries (which is depicted on the Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25 inch map (S2)) almost forms a fourth north side to the enclosure. Given this possible relationship, the cropmarks may be of relatively recent origin and low archaeological significance. However, this is not certain, and the postulated enclosure may extend to the north of the field boundary. Other vague cropmarks visible on the same aerial photograph in the surrounding area have not been mapped for these same reasons.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 28 April 2010.
