Summary

Two possible World War Two bomb craters are visible as soil- and cropmarks on aerial photographs. They are first visible on photographs taken in February 1946, on which they appear to have been very recently infilled. Whilst a more mundane origin as marl pits or ponds is possible, they are not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps, and their size and spacing is very reminiscent of bomb craters recorded elsewhere in Norfolk.

Map

April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Two possible World War Two bomb craters are visible as soil- and cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 0999 0967 and TG 1011 0962. They are first visible on photographs taken in February 1946, on which they appear to have been very recently infilled. Whilst a more mundane origin as marl pits or ponds is possible, they are not depicted on any of the consulted historic maps (including (S3)) and their appearance is of features that have been relatively recently created as well as infilled. Although rather oval in plan (perhaps a product of their backfilling), their matching size and their spacing is also reminiscent of bomb craters recorded elsewhere in Norfolk.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 28 April 2010.
