Map

January 2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with replacement of lead water supply pipe.
Finds recovered including post-medieval brick, roof tile and pottery dating to the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. No in-situ archaeological deposits were observed. The building materials recovered from the backfill were probably deposited during renovation work at the Water Gate c. 1948. A large concrete block observed in the trench below the canal archway of the Water Gate is likely to be the base of a large concrete bollard used for mooring boats and is shown on various photographs of the Water Gate taken in the early 1900s.
See report (S1) for further details.
