Full Description
April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two checkpoint is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 1425 0980. The site is visible as a linear white mark spanning the width of the road. A small structure or building is visible just the other side of the hedge at its northeastern end. The remains of what may have been a similar structure are just visible, again beyond the hedge, at its southwestern end, but the considerable disturbance around it suggests that it had been at least partly demolished; alternatively, the various tracks leading from it into the surrounding field may indicate that it is instead a feeder or trough for livestock. The checkpoint lay on a minor road leading from Bawburgh to the south to Easton Hall (NHER 19820) and Easton to the north. As there is no clear evidence of a significant military presence in the immediate vicinity the purpose of the checkpoint is unclear, and consequently the validity of this interpretation of the site uncertain; it might instead merely be an agricultural feature.
