Summary

A small ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. It could represent the site of a Bronze Age round barrow; other barrows are recorded in the area (for example NHER 9290 less than 1km to the northeast), and prehistoric flints have been recovered from the vicinity (NHER 15764). However, there is something about the cropmark that does not ring true for a Bronze Age site, and the ring ditch could be of natural origin (a fungus ring, for example), or relate to a site of more recent origin.

Map

April 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of one or more ring ditches described below were previously recorded as part of NHER 15764.
A small ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 1439 0961. A second ring ditch, probably of natural origin and alleged to be visible as a cropmark on the same aerial photographs, was not identified by the NMP. The mapped ring ditch could represent the site of a Bronze Age round barrow; other barrows are recorded in the area (for example NHER 9290 less than 1km to the northeast), and prehistoric flints have been recovered from the vicinity (NHER 15764). However, the character of the cropmark does not ring true for a Bronze Age site, and the ring ditch could instead be of natural origin (a fungus ring, for example), or relate to a site of more recent origin. Although lying somewhat further east than its suggested location, it could perhaps relate to the post medieval windmill depicted in the vicinity of Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S3).
The ring ditch is an irregular circle in plan and measures approximately 13m in diameter.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 30 April 2010.
