Summary

The cropmarks of enclosures and boundaries which could form part of a farmstead of unknown, but potentially Iron Age date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Caistor Lane, Caistor St Edmund. The cropmarks indicate a highly subdivided and enclosed area of land, which potentially represent the remains of a small settlement or farmstead site. Finds of Iron Age, Roman and Saxon date have been found within the general vicinity of this site (NHER 9802, 9805, 9807 and 13558). These cropmarks show no obvious relationship with the Roman temple complex to the north (NHER 9787) and possible roads leading to it from the Roman town to the west (NHER 52257), which may indicate that an Iron Age date could be suggested for this site. See NHER 52260 for a similar site within relatively close proximity.
