Summary

The cropmarks of a network of roads and tracks of probable Roman date linking the Roman town at Caistor St Edmund (NHER 9786) and the temple complex to the northeast (NHER 9787) are visible on aerial photographs. The road segments to the immediate south of Burnthouse Farm would appear to represent a continuation of the Roman road excavated in 1928 that runs from NE corner of the town (NHER 9816).

Map

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a network of roads and tracks of probable Roman date linking the Roman town at Caistor St Edmund (NHER 9786) and the temple complex to the northeast (NHER 9787) are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 2379 0382. The road segments to the immediate south of Burnthouse Farm would appear to represent a continuation of the Roman road excavated in 1928 that runs from NE corner of the town (NHER 9816). A thick layer of flint was observed in the side of a dyke alongside the route of one of these mapped roads (NHER 12581). One of these roads is likely to have continued to the northeast and lead to the monument archway revealed during the excavations of the temple complex (NHER 9787) (S4). Another would potentially form part of a stone spread located to the south of the temple temenos, see NHER 9787 and (S4) for details. Another road can be seen to branch to the northeast appearing to terminate in the area of the northwest corner of the temenos. Excavations in the 1950s (S4) indicated a broad gravel spread running alongside the western temenos wall, and this probably formed part of a walkway or surfaced path linking the two roads.
