Full Description
March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of possible pits and small rectangular ditched areas may be visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3) to the south of the Roman town of Venta Icenorum (NHER 9786). The site is centred on TG 2292 0317. The archaeological origin of all of these recorded features is uncertain and it is feasible that a proportion relate to underlying geological features. Cropmarks of a distinctly non-archaeological origin are visible within this area, but the features mapped do perhaps relate to archaeological activity. The site potentially consists of a series of small elongated and sub-rectangular pit-like features, approximately 2m by 3m. These would compare well with the remains of possible sunken-floored structures mapped elsewhere and potentially of Saxon date (NHER 52198). Surrounding these pits is a possible series of ditched seeming to define small rectangular areas, following the same alignment as the pits and/or structures. Although the archaeological nature of all of these features is uncertain it could be suggested that these features relate to an area of Saxon date settlement or industrial activity.
S. Horlock (NMP), 23 March 2009.
