Summary

The possible cropmarks of a semi-circular ditch, which possibly represent the remains of a prehistoric enclosure or barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the southeast of the Roman town of Venta Icenorum (NHER 9786). It is not clear whether this represents an only partially visible ring ditch or whether the monument was originally semi-circular. A prehistoric date for this feature seems likely and other possible prehistoric enclosures or funerary sites have been recorded in close proximity, see NHER 52223 for details. Part of a Bronze Age sickle has also been found within the vicinity of the site (NHER 22076).

Map

March 2009. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a semi-circular ditch, which possibly represent the remains of a prehistoric enclosure or barrow, are visible on aerial photographs (S1) to the southeast of the Roman town of Venta Icenorum (NHER 9786). The site is centred on TG 2342 0315. The ditch is 29m across and 11m deep, as is visible. It is not clear whether this represents an only partially visible ring ditch with an overall potential diameter of 19m, or whether the monument was originally semi-circular. A prehistoric date for this feature seems likely and other possible prehistoric enclosures or funerary sites have been recorded in close proximity, see NHER 52223 for details. Part of a Bronze Age sickle has also been found within the vicinity of the site (NHER 22076).
