NHER 53261 (Monument record) - Possible World War Two air raid shelter

A possible World War Two air raid shelter is visible as a structure and earthwork on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 2138 0661. The interpretation of the postulated shelter is not certain; only a surface-level rectangular concrete platform is visible in 1942 (S1), with a sunken entrance visible at the southern corner in 1945 (S2). It is suggested that this is a covered trench shelter, but other, non-defensive interpretations are also possible. Small huts/structures and other features visible in the same field have been interpreted as non-defensive in nature and consequently have not been mapped by the NMP.
The shelter was sited in the corner of an area of open land, situated between private gardens and allotments, and was presumably intended for the use of local residents and/or allotment holders. Unusually, a possible emergency water tank (NHER 53260) is located in a similarly secluded location 40m to the northwest.
