Summary

A probable World War Two civil defence building, perhaps an ARP warden’s post or a Home Guard shelter, is visible as an extant building or structure on aerial photographs. It lies in an area of considerable military activity, including a series of possible road blocks or barriers to the immediate southwest (NHER 53276) and a barrage balloon, anti-landing trenches and a possible spigot mortar emplacement to the east (NHER 53278-9 and 53283). The building could be associated with one or more of these sites.

Map

May 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A probable World War Two civil defence building is visible as an extant building/structure on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 2262 0653. It may also be visible on aerial photographs taken in 1942 (S3). The small, rectangular, concrete structure, which has a blast wall or traverse protecting its entrance, is very similar to ARP warden’s posts mapped from aerial photographs elsewhere in Norwich, although it is not included in a list of such posts in Banger 2003 (S4). Alternatively, it is also similar to the Home Guard shelters mapped at various locations across the city. At the same time, a different defensive use, perhaps as an air raid shelter and perhaps associated with one or more of the other World War Two military sites recorded in this area is also possible.
Later aerial photographs (S5) indicate that it had been removed by May 1951.
