Full Description
May 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Rectilinear ditches together with a pit-like feature, all of unknown date, are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), and also possibly (S2), centred at TG 1417 0798. One of the ditches, which defines a corner at its western end, may represent part of an enclosure. A pit-like cropmark is visible within this corner; other linear and pit-like cropmarks visible in the area have been dismissed as being of geological or recent agricultural origin. Similar interpretations are also possible for the recorded features; the ditches perhaps represent drains for the adjacent area of conifer plantation, or the muck heap (?) visible to the east on the aerial photographs. Alternatively, and more probably given the nature of the marks, they might relate to one or more of the findspots (ranging from prehistoric to medieval in date) recorded in the surrounding area, or to the possible settlement of Roman date visible as cropmarks 450m to the northwest (NHER 53596).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 18 May 2010.
