NHER 53440 (Monument record) - Mound of uncertain, perhaps modern date

A circular mound of unknown date is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 2200 0986. It does not give the appearance of being particularly old, and may be of modern date; nothing is depicted here on any of the historic maps consulted. It may even be a temporary mound of vegetation or similar material, although the fact that it is visible for at least two years would argue against this. There is no clear evidence that it relates to Norwich’s World War Two military and civil defences, and its location - in a semi-industrial area adjacent to the River Wensum – suggests it could have served an industrial or river-related function. It may have been levelled by 1951 (S3).
The mound measures approximately 5m in diameter, and is surrounded by a narrow ring ditch measuring 5.5m in diameter. Possible additional outer ditches are visible to its west and northwest, although all of these could merely be narrow tracks through the surrounding vegetation.
