Summary

A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an earthwork (probably an earth- and vegetation-covered semi-sunken structure) on aerial photographs. It lay adjacent to some allotments or horticultural plots and was not particularly large, suggesting that it was probably a public shelter, provided for anyone in the vicinity during a bombing raid. It is one of several such shelters evident across the city, but is unusual in that each of its two entrances was protected by a blast wall of masonry or sandbags.
