Full Description
June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The site of a probable World War Two tank training area is visible on aerial photographs at Ringland Hills (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 1369 1248 and consists of an area of well defined tracks running up and down the undulating landscape of the Ringland Hills. These would appear to be related to tank training exercises. A nucleated cluster of large craters, presumably from shell fire from tanks, is also apparent on the plateau (area defined in mapping by ‘extent of area’ centred on TG 1376 1245). It is probable that a number of the earthworks and pits recorded in this area, such as NHER 12609, 33258, are all likely to relate to the remains of tank tracks and shell craters.
S. Horlock (NMP), 09 June 2010.
September 2025. HER Enhancement: Forestry Commission Project K.
Earthworks associated with the former Second World War tank training area, previously recorded by the NMP survey (see above), are visible on visualised lidar data (S4). As the lidar survey was flow relatively recently (2021), it is like that the earthworks still survive. A section of bank can be seen crossing the area on an approximate northwest to southeast alignment (centred at approximately TG 1352 1250 and TG 1362 1244). It is uncertain as to whether this feature relates to a Second World War training feature or to an earlier possible medieval to post medieval boundary bank.
