Summary

Possible World War Two road blocks or similar obstructions are visible as earthworks/strips of disturbed ground on 1940s aerial photographs. The features are unusual, and their precise form and purpose/cause is uncertain. Some seem to be vehicle tracks, but why they should be so prominent, and where they led from/to is unclear. However, a role as an impediment to vehicles, or as anti-landing obstacles, seems plausible.

Map

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Possible World War Two road blocks or similar obstructions are visible as earthworks/strips of disturbed ground on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S8), on Daniels and Lakenham Road, between TG 2178 0703 and TG 2261 0651. The features are unusual, and their precise form and purpose/cause uncertain. Some seem to be vehicle tracks, perhaps leading to field entrances on either side of the road (although in most cases the boundaries appear as unbroken fence lines on the aerial photographs) but why they should be so prominent, and where they led from/to is unclear. However, given their number and unusual appearance, even if some are just tracks leading from adjacent fields, a role for the group as a whole, as a wartime impediment to vehicles, or as anti-landing obstacles, seems plausible. At the same time, the possibility that they are simply mundane, non-military (and perhaps non-World War Two) features cannot be ruled out.
