NHER 53693 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Site of possible pre-medieval (Iron Age to Roman?) field boundaries

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
Possible pre-medieval, perhaps Iron Age to Roman, field boundaries and trackways are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 1461 0675. The cropmarks are rather scrappy and incoherent, but they perhaps form a roughly co-axial pattern, distinguished by a number of double-ditched elements, similar to more complete and extensive Late Iron Age to Roman field systems identified elsewhere in Norfolk. They are overlain by the site of a substantial field and/or parish boundary of probable medieval date (NHER 53694). Further archaeological cropmarks may be visible in these and surrounding fields, but they are difficult to distinguish from those of the background geology; similarly, some of the mapped cropmarks could be of geological rather than archaeological origin.

Although the short east-to-west aligned cropmark at TG 1477 0684 fell within the area examined where was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.

A trench placed to coincide with the short east-to-west aligned cropmark at TG 1477 0684 revealed no corresponding sub-surface remains.
