Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches and probable former field boundaries of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs. The date of the ditches is uncertain, although a Roman date is a possibility for some of them. Finds in the area include Roman and medieval date material (NHER 33086). See NHER 53484 for discussion of a possible enclosure of either Roman or medieval to post medieval date within the area of this site.

Map

May 2010. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches and probable former field boundaries of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 1466 1528. The date of the ditches is uncertain, although a Roman date is a possibility for some of them. Finds in the area include Roman and medieval date material (NHER 33086). See NHER 53484 for discussion of a possible enclosure of either Roman or medieval to post medieval date within the area of this site. It must be noted that the aerial photographs for this area also showed numerous linear and rectilinear cropmarks of geological origin and that these sometimes made the confident identification of archaeological features problematic. It is therefore possible that a limited number of ditch-like features mapped are also derived from natural features.
S. Horlock (NMP), 07 May 2010.

March-June 2009. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site F1).
Although the area surveyed coincided with two fragmentary cropmarks mapped at TG 1473 1547 no corresponding anomalies were identified.
See report (S4) and NHER 61122 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 May 2019.

April-August 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field F1a).
Although two of the trenches coincided with a fragmentary cropmark at TG 1445 1551 no corresponding sub-surface remains were identified.
See report (S5) and NHER 63365 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 May 2019.
