Full Description
June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two barrage balloon site is visible as huts, structures and other signs of activity on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 2356 0636. Nothing is visible here in 1942 (S4). The clearest evidence of the balloon site’s existence is the actual balloon itself, which can be seen in flight approximately 125m to the southwest (at TG 2342 0624) on an aerial photograph taken in 1943 (S1). It is therefore possible that the balloon was instead tethered elsewhere, the features visible in this field having been misinterpreted, but there is little evidence of an alternative site visible on the aerial photographs.
The approximate extent of the site has been mapped, together with the extent of the probable tethering array (at TG 2356 0636). A possible pillbox, gun emplacement, spigot mortar emplacement or similar is visible (but not clearly) in the southwest corner of the site (at TG 2352 0636).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 29 June 2010.
