Map

June 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two barrage balloon site is visible as group of structures and disturbed ground, etc, on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 2373 0971. The site is also recorded in a bibliographic source (S5) as Site 16: ‘Ketts Cove entrance of children’s playground, Morley Street’. Few individual elements have warranted mapping by the NMP, in part due to the difficulty of distinguishing World War Two features from those relating to the former quarry (NHER 26555) and playground. Tents are visible in the northwestern part of the site in 1942 (S1)-(S2). The central tethering point for the balloon seems to have been (in 1943 at least (S3)) at approximately TG 2374 0970. A small concrete structure at the southeastern corner of the site, its entrance protected by a traverse or blast wall, is presumed to be a related structure (such as an air raid shelter). A second such structure, although without a blast wall, is visible on allotments just outside the confines of the site (at approximately TG 2375 0966); it could also be a related structure but is thought more likely to be a shed or similar, and consequently has not been mapped.
