Summary

Probable World War Two anti-landing obstacles are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. In common with other areas of such obstacles visible in the vicinity (principally NHER 53372 15m to the northwest) the obstacles are predominantly formed by pits. This contrasts with the more extensive systems of pits and ditches/banks evident elsewhere around the city (for example NHER 53254 875m to the west).

Map

Probable World War Two anti-landing obstacles are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 2190 0597. In common with other areas of such obstacles visible in the vicinity, principally NHER 53372 15m to the northwest, the obstacles are predominantly formed by pits, a single length of ditch being visible at the extreme southwest of the site. These contrast with the more extensive systems of pits and ditches/banks evident elsewhere around the city (for example NHER 53254 875m to the west). It is possible that such elements existed at the site in greater numbers but are not clear enough on the consulted aerial photographs to have been identified. The pits and ditch have been mapped schematically to provide a representation of their location and size, rather than a detailed depiction of their outline or that of any upcast spoil.
