Summary

A possible World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an earth-covered structure on aerial photographs. It lies within a small yard and may have been an industrial shelter, provided for the use of workers in adjacent industrial buildings to its east (see too the possible emergency water tank 10m to the east, NHER 53446). It could equally have been used instead or as well by local inhabitants and members of the public, although whether there was free access into the yard is not clear. At the same time, the identification of the site as an air raid shelter is not entirely certain as the consulted aerial photographs are not particularly clear. No evidence of the site is visible on more recent aerial photographs of the area.

Map

March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an earth-covered structure on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 2288 0978. It may also be visible on aerial photographs taken in 1942 (S4). Unfortunately, the site is not particularly clear on the consulted aerial photographs, and thus its identification as an air raid shelter is not entirely certain. Nevertheless, it appears to consist of a long rectangular structure, surrounded and partially covered by banks of earth and/or vegetation or other debris. It lies within a small yard adjacent to what appears to have been a complex of industrial buildings to its east, and it may have been an industrial shelter, provided for workers at in the adjacent buildings (see too the possible emergency water tank 10m to its east, NHER 53446). However, what access was available to the yard is not clear; if it was open to the street then the shelter might equally have been used by local residents and members of public. No traces of the site have been identified on more recent aerial photographs of the site.
