Summary

A possible World War Two emergency water tank is visible as a structure on 1940s aerial photographs. Its small size compared to others identified in the city, such as those forming part of NHER 26605 approximately 70m to the southwest, and its location within what appears to have been a private yard in an industrial complex, suggest that if this interpretation is correct it may have been intended for private use. The many others identified in Norwich seem principally to have been for public benefit, used to store water for fire fighting in the event of a bombing raid. The structure described here may have served a similar purpose, but relating specifically to the industrial buildings that surround it. The possible air raid shelter visible 10m to its west (NHER 53445) may similarly have been provided for workers at the site, although its use by the public or local inhabitants cannot be ruled out. No trace of the water tank is visible on more recent aerial photographs of the site.

Map

March 2010. Norfolk NMP.
A possible World War Two emergency water tank is visible as a structure on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 2290 0978. It does not appear to be visible on photographs taken in April 1942, so may have been erected after this date. It was located within what appears to have been an industrial yard and this, together with its relatively small size (compared to others mapped across the city), suggests that it might have been intended for ‘private’ use, specifically intended for fire fighting within the surrounding industrial complex. Similarly, the possible air raid shelter (NHER 53445) 10m to its west might have served the workers of this same industrial area, although this is less certain. At the same time, the interpretation of the supposed water tank is not itself certain; it could instead have served some industrial purpose unrelated to the war. No evidence of the structure has been identified on more recent aerial photographs of the site.
